Summer '13: #GMAPitbull

Summer '13: #GMAPitbull

Pitbull brought Miami to New York during his performance on Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series this morning.

Dressed in all white (per GMA request via Facebook), I arrived at the Central Park stage at 6:30 am eager to secure a prime position near the stage. After flashing my VIP wristband I received a free white fedora which completed my all white ensemble. My spot near the stage allowed me to take some excellent photos of Pitbull and guest surprise guest, Will Smith! Who knew the Fresh Prince was a fan?!

Orange Crush: Dewey Beach Original

Orange Crush: Dewey Beach Original

Orange Crush: Dewey Beach Original by DCBeerGirl on Polyvore

With the official start of summer upon us, I thought I would share two of Washingtonians’ favorite summer things: Dewey Beach and Orange Crushes.

Most people associate the beach with family bonding and picnics. However, there is different beach that resonates with locals in Washington, D.C. - Dewey Beach. For better or worse, it is spring break for adults every weekend.

Dewey Beach is also known for its signature cocktail, the Orange Crush. It is a mix of vodka, triple sec, sprite and fresh orange juice. This iconic drink is delicious and refreshing! The key component to the drink is the fresh orange juice.  Traditionally it is made with an orange press which squeezes out more of the essential oils from the peel.

While you can easily make these at home (recipe below), there is something special about drinking one of these at the Starboard, where Happy Hour starts at 9 am.

ingredients
  • 2 oranges, juiced
  • 1.5 oz vodka
  • 1 oz orange liqueur
  • splash of lemon-lime soda
  • ice

directions
Pour all ingredients into cocktail mixer and shake. Strain into a cocktail glass filled with ice. Garnish with a slice of orange. For a different twist, try making with pink grapefruit.

Mexican Mombo Taxi

With the weather warming up, it's an ideal time to sit outside and enjoy a frozen adult beverage! Intrigued by all of the positive reviews, I decided to check out the newly opened Mi Cocina. After perusing the extensive cocktail list, I opted to try the highly recommended and infamous - Mambo Taxi

The Mambo Taxi is a blend of frozen margarita swirled with fruity sangria. It is a cool and tasty thirst quencher. But drinker beware - they are sneakily potent. Given the restaurant's strategic location amongst the Collection shops in Chevy Chase, be careful not to do too much damage while drunken shopping at Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo or Gucci.

Making the Mambo Taxi at home:

ingredients
  • 3 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 2 1/2 ounces Sauza Silver Tequila
  • 1 1/2 ounces Hiram Walker Triple Sec
  • 6 large ice cubes
  • 1 1/2 ounces high quality Spanish Sangria
  • 1 ounce Brandy
directions
Puree lime juice, tequila, triple sec and ice cubes in blender. Pour into a 9 ounce glass. Swirl in the sangria, then the brandy.
